Ear psoriasis symptoms and causes

If you are experiencing severe itchiness followed by the formation of white or slightly yellowish dry scales on your ears, you might be having ear psoriasis. Psoriasis is a skin disorder which can be located on various areas on our body, including those sensitive and hidden ones. Similar to other psoriasis infection on the elbow, knees, scalp, or face, ear psoriasis shows some symptoms which include:

  1. Constant, severe itchiness which felt on almost entire ear areas, including outer ear flap and earlobe.
  2. Formation of red flaky skin which sometimes raises forming uneven skin structure.
  3. Blocked external ear canal because of constant excessive ear wax build.
  4. Ear skin cracks and bleed.

There are no exact causes known for ear psoriasis. However, immune system disturbance and stress are often the suspected culprits. Scalp psoriasis can also trigger the formation of ear psoriasis. Skin flakes which occur during psoriasis infection may drop onto another area once scratched. When these flakes on your scalp are scratched and fall into your ear areas, they will trigger the occurrence of psoriasis on the ear. However, ear psoriasis might also be caused by irritation to certain beauty products, including shampoo and bath soap. Wearing non-gold earrings can leads to skin allergy and psoriasis as well. In women, ear psoriasis is usually also triggered by the usage of excessive hair sprays and hair dyeing products which are full of chemicals. Bacteria and fungus might also cause psoriasis on your ear and ear canal.

Best psoriasis ear canal treatments

Psoriasis which occurs in ear canal might form flakes which block the canal and hence, decreases hearing ability. As ear canal is a really sensitive area which is hard to be seen with naked eyes, treatment for this ear canal psoriasis should be done really carefully. Harsh chemical and sharp instruments should not be used as they might break the inner ear drum and cause hearing loss. There are several procedures which can be employed to heal this painful skin flakes on your ears:

  1. Ear wax evacuation

Ear wax accumulated during psoriasis infection might cause pain and slight, temporary hearing loss. A physician can take this hard ear wax out of the canal using sterile forceps. This can be a relief and reduces the pain it might cause.

  1. Medications

Medications prescribed by professional practitioner for treating ear canal psoriasis usually work by softening the accumulated wax blocking the canal while eliminating any possible harmful bacteria. These medications are usually in the form of liquid or lotion which can be applied to ear flaps and exterior ear canal carefully using sterile cotton buds. If ear psoriasis is accompanied by bleeding, an antibiotic might be useful to reduce the pain.

  1. Olive oil

Olive oil is a magic solution which works for various skin disorders, including ear psoriasis.Applying a small amount of olive oil with a cotton bud onto your affected ear areas before night sleep will help soften the raised skin and hence, make the red flakes easier to remove. Leave the applied olive oil overnight and wipe it off in the morning using lukewarm water thoroughly. Olive oil is a natural anti-inflammation which will give soothing feeling to your affected ear.

  1. Hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide solution is also known as an effective home remedy for ear canal psoriasis. Put some drops of hydrogen peroxide into the ear canal and let it bubble for a couple of minutes. You might feel tickly during this application. Afterwards, roll over to let the solution out onto a towel of tissue. Do the same thing to another ear to clean the blocked canal. Hydrogen peroxide is commonly used as a natural disinfectant which breaks the wax, leaving your canal clear.

  1. Ear candle treatment

Some people found that ear candle treatment does much better than any ear psoriasis medications and treatments do. This home remedy is done by lighting a certain kind of candle which has been inserted on one side into the ear canal. Heat produced through the lighting process will give a vacuuming function which will suck the wax, yeast, and dry scales inside the canal out. Apart from clearing the ear canal, the heat gives a shooting feeling and relieves severe itchiness experienced during the infection. However, this treatment is advised to be done by professionals only, as a mistake might lead to hearing loss.
