How to get rid of a canker sore in your mouth naturally?

Mouth ulcers are painful and uncomfortable, especially if it is located on the part of the mouth we use constantly to talk and eat—the tongue. Mouth ulcers are often located on the tongue—known as canker sores or apthous ulcers, causing inflammation and wound, or underneath the tongue, causing severe pain, and burning and tingling sensation. Although may heal without any professional medical help, mouth ulcers located around the tongue can be disturbing as it tends to take longer period to heal, not to mention the difficulty on applying medications and remedies considering its hidden location.

Home remedies for canker sores or apthous ulcers

Canker sores are commonly very painful and tend to take a quite long period to heal. Some home remedies, however, are known to be able to relieve the pain and thus, speed up the entire healing process for canker sores.

  • Rinse the mouth

Rinsing the mouth is one of the most effective remedies for mouth ulcers or sores, including soreness beneath or on the tongue. Use saline solution which is mixed with a pinch of baking soda to relieve the caused pain and trigger proper healing faster. Rinse the mouth and give pressure to the area of the tongue to minimize the swelling of the tongue and reduce the burning sensation caused by the canker sore.

  • Avoid acidic and spicy foods

When having canker sores, your tongue becomes extremely sensitive. Hence, acidic and spicy foods might aggravate the sores, delaying the entire healing process. These kinds of foods also trigger irritation to the throat, which makes the canker sores worse.

  • Drink a lot of fluids

To promote faster healing, it is important to make sure the body is sufficiently hydrated. Eight glasses of water or more per day is required during canker sore healing period. Avoid drinking coffee and soda, which may irritate the sore and inhibit proper healing.

Home remedies to get rid of mouth ulcers

  • Avoid smoking

Smoking might cause the mouth lining and tongue to dry out. Hence, canker sores located on the tongue will likely to get worse when you are smoking heavily.

  • Tea bags

Chamomile tea bags is a remedy which can be used to alleviate pain caused by canker sore. It contains a compound which is called levomenol, which is an anti-inflammation and antiseptic. To use the tea bag remedy, soak a bag of chamomile tea into a cup of warm water. Afterwards, apply the tea bag onto the canker sore on your tongue, letting it sit for a few minutes. Repeat this remedy twice a day for maximized effect.

  • Clove oil

Clove oil contains eugenol substance, which is an effective painkiller that is to be used for the mouth and tongue. To use clove oil to cure your canker sore, make sure you swash the mouth lining, especially beneath the tongue using saline solution first. Drop some clove oil onto a cotton ball and apply it directly onto the sore by holding it for several minutes on the wound site. This will sting a little bit, yet will numb the sore, which is a good thing. Repeat the treatment twice a day and do this before night sleeping to get an effective output.

  • Yogurt

Yogurt is delicious and contains good bacteria our body needs. Consuming a portion regularly every day will help curing the canker sore. Plain yogurt is the best one, since the others with acidic fruits might aggravate the sore instead.

  • Ice cubes

Ice cubes is a good remedy for canker sores. It is also simple to apply. When you develop pain on your tongue caused by canker sores, take an ice cube and place it directly to the painful site. Ice cubes will help numbing the site, which is beneficial in preventing the canker sore to develop. Hold the ice cubes directly against the sore for several minutes until the pain subsides.

  • Garlic

Garlic contains an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties which are helpful in curing severe canker sores. Slice the garlic and put it directly onto the sore. Hold it for a few minutes. This remedy stings, but it will improve the healing process and relieve the canker sore-induced pain.
