How to heal inflamed gums naturally?

There are variety of dental issues that commonly be a concern. Among all, dental cavity and gum problem are the most frequently-discussed ones. Similar to your teeth, your gums play an important role in your entire dental condition. Gum-concerning problems can cause severe discomfort and pain around the mouth region and may even affect some other body parts.

Inflamed gum is one of the most familiar gum problem that may be triggered by variety of causes, such as:

  • Vigorous tooth brushing.
  • Improper flossing technique
  • Bacterial infection, such as gingivitis and periodontitis.

Prolonged inflamed gum may lead to more serious things, such as permanent bad breath, bleeding, pus accumulation, deteriorating jaw bone health, and tooth loss. Thus, proper treatments for inflamed gums is required, and considering the delicacy of your gums, more natural treatments are advised.

Healing inflamed gums naturally

Never put off treatments for inflamed gums. You need to immediately perform the treatments as soon as the problem initiates. There are some methods, practices, and remedies that are more natural than manufactured medications which may help relieving pain and other effects from an inflamed gum.

  1. Proper oral practices

    • Brush your teeth gently in circular motions. Avoid brushing the teeth vigorously as this may irritate the already-inflamed gum region.
    • Choose a toothbrush with soft bristles and use non-alcoholic mouthwash while experiencing inflamed gum. Hard bristles and alcoholic mouthwash will likely to aggravate the problem.
    • Avoid using dental flosses if your gum is swollen. Dental floss that rubs your inflamed gums may trigger bleeding that may lead to infection. Once the inflammation goes away, dental floss can be reused.
  2. Reducing inflammation

    • Saline solution

Saline solution is a really good natural remedy for an inflamed gum. You can either use an over-the-counter saline solution or dissolve a teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water to make saline solution. Use it to rinse your mouth several times a day. Salt is not only an effective anti-bacterial that kills infesting bacteria responsible for the infection, but also reduce swelling.

  • Turmeric paste

Turmeric paste is easy to find and has various health-caring properties. Make paste out of a teaspoon of turmeric powder, a teaspoon of salt, and enough water to make a potent anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-virus. Rub the paste gently onto the affected gum and leave it for 5 minutes. Rinse the mouth with lukewarm water afterwards.

  1. Killing infesting bacteria

    • Raw honey

Honey has an anti-bacterial property and thus, is beneficial for killing bacteria that trigger gum inflammation. Apply a thin layer of raw honey onto the affected region. However, raw honey is recommended, while processed honey should not be used, as it contains additional substances that may aggravate the inflammation.

  • Garlic

Garlic is a natural antibiotic, which is required for killing bacteria. To use this remedy with inflamed gums, crush two cloves of garlic and place them on the affected region. As this will trigger burning sensation, you might want to dip it in raw honey before placed. You can also blend two cloves of garlic with a glass of warm water and use the mixture for rinsing the mouth lining and inflamed gum. This will kill infesting bacteria and prevent further bacterial infestation around the affected area.

  1. Alleviating pain

    • Clove oil

Clove oil is highly antiseptic and has a function of improving inflamed gum condition. A dab of clove oil may not taste very good. Yet, it is an effective pain killer that will be able to alleviate pain caused by the infection. Apply some thin layers of clove oil onto the inflamed gums and repeat several times a day to minimize caused pain.

  • Herbal mouthwash

While alcohol-containing mouthwash may aggravate inflamed gum condition, herbal-based mouthwash may do the contrary. Rinse the mouth and hold the mouthwash inside for several minutes before spitting it out to help alleviate the pain. Herbal mouthwash is suggested to be used as a replacement for alcoholic mouthwash that may trigger irritation in some people. Replacing your toothpaste with the herbal one is also beneficial in avoiding gum diseases that can lead to more serious mouth problems.
