Home Remedy or Medication to Treat Spider Bite

A spider bite is commonly less dangerous unless the one which bites you is known as a venomous one or you have any allergic reaction to the venom. That’s why you should make sure the type of spider which bites you before you try any home remedies which will be listed below. If the spider is venomous, you are highly recommended to get the medical help immediately then try to treat it at home, since antivenom may be required. If you are in doubt about the type of the spider, you are still recommended to get medical help to ensure the type and to get any medical treatment needed.

Most of these home remedies and medications work symptomatic means that most of them will treat the bite based on the symptoms such as pain, swelling, itching, redness and the other local reactions.

Home Remedies

These home remedies can be applied after you wash the affected area with water and mild soap.

Ice pack

An ice pack can reduce the itching sensation and reduce swelling. Remember to apply an ice pack, not ice cube directly to the bitten area.

What to do:

  • Prepare some ice cubes.
  • Put them into a thin, clean and soft towel or cloth.
  • Apply the ice pack for 10 minutes, then take it off for 10 minutes and apply it over for the next 10 minute.

Turmeric

Turmeric can act as a painkiller, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory which help to reduce pain, swelling, and inflammation of the bite.

What to do :

  • Prepare 2 teaspoons of turmeric or turmeric powder.
  • Prepare an amount of olive oil.
  • Mix the turmeric and olive oil to the point it has a paste-like texture.
  • Apply the mixture to the site of the bite and leave it stays for 10 minutes.
  • Rinse it with warm water.
  • For the best result, repeat it regularly.

Baking soda

Baking soda, besides draw out the venom (for the harmless venom), also will help to reduce the pain, itchy sensation and any inflammation on the bite.

What to do:

  • Prepare 1 teaspoon of baking soda.
  • Prepare 3 teaspoons of water.
  • Mix both of baking soda and water to get a paste-like texture.
  • Apply it onto the bite and let it sits for 5 minutes before you rinse it with lukewarm water.
  • You can repeat this after a few hours if necessary.

Aloe vera gel

Aloe vera has been known as a natural antiseptic and anti-inflammatory which help to reduce swelling, itchy sensation and pain of the bitten area.

What to do:

  • Wash the aloe vera leaf (the number of leaves depends on your preference).
  • Extract the aloe vera gel inside the leaves.
  • Apply the gel onto the bitten area and let it dry on its own.
  • Repeat this for multiple times a day.

Salt

This one is the easiest remedy to be found and applied. Salt can act as antiseptic and anti-inflammatory to reduce inflammation and redness on the bitten area. It also helps to draw out the spider venom (the harmless one). You can use sea salt or table salt.

What to do:

  • Wetting a clean towel or cloth
  • Sprinkle the salt to the wet towel/cloth.
  • Compress the towel/washcloth to the bitten area for 2 hours.
  • Repeat this if necessary.

Medication

The remedies mentioned above are easy to be made and applied. But if you are the one who prefers medication than those home remedy, or you want to apply both of them, here are the list of medication you can use to treat the spider bite:

Aspirin Paste

An aspirin paste may help to neutralize the harmless venom and reduce the swelling and inflammation on the bitten area with its anti-inflammatory properties.

What to do:

  • Make a paste by crushing 2 tablets of aspirin in a little amount of water.
  • Apply the paste onto the bite and leave it stays for 2 hours before you rinse it with lukewarm water.
  • Repeat this if necessary.

Hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion

What to do:

  • Apply any recommended hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to the affected area will help you to get rid of itchy sensation and redness.

Antihistamine

What to do:

  • You can take a recommended antihistamine such as Benadryl or Chlor-triton to reduce the pain, itchy sensation, redness and swelling on the bitten area.

Antibiotic ointment

Antibiotic ointment will help to prevent any further skin infection. You can choose one them such as Bacitracin or Polymyxin B sulfate

What to do:

  • Apply the antibiotic to the bitten area.
  • Use an adhesive bandage to cover the application.

Note: some of the medication recommended above are nonprescription medicines, so follow the instruction on the package, or ask for any recommendation from a medical professional.
